To address a letter you are posting to the USA from abroad, copy the recipient’s complete US address and put the destination country on its own final line. Keep your overseas return address in a separate block, with its own country. Follow the postal operator accepting your envelope for the exact country wording and placement.

If you upload a PDF for printing and mailing inside the US, use the provider’s US mailing instructions instead. Postmarkr requires a usable US return address; your location when you upload does not determine the envelope’s mailing origin.

Start with the country where the paper enters the mail#

Look at where the paper enters the mail. An envelope handed to Royal Mail in London starts in the UK. A letter printed and posted in the US from your upload starts in the US.

Use your accepting carrier’s guidance. Royal Mail’s USA guide (opens in new tab) allows USA on the last line. Canada Post’s US addressing instructions (opens in new tab) give the delivery-block order; its international addressing guidance (opens in new tab) asks for the country name in full.

Keep the city, state and ZIP Code. The country line is an extra line below them, not a replacement. Copy the complete delivery address the recipient supplied.

Build the delivery block, then add the country line#

UK-origin delivery block — fictional example

MORGAN LEE
123 EXAMPLE STREET
BOSTON MA 02110
USA

Use this example to check the line order, not as a mailing destination. Replace every name and address line with the recipient’s verified details.

For a Canada-origin version, spell the final line UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Canada Post also specifies two spaces between the state abbreviation and ZIP Code. Keep the street address intact; you are adapting the envelope to the accepting carrier’s format. See its US address spacing guidance (opens in new tab).

Preserve any additional building or department details the recipient supplies. Ask them to clarify an incomplete or contradictory line.

Our domestic envelope-addressing guide covers placement, apartments, attention lines and PO Boxes. Use it for those details. The task here is adding the international country information and separating the overseas sender block from the US delivery block.

Give the return block its own country#

A foreign-origin envelope has two countries for two different reasons: the destination country belongs at the end of the delivery block, and the sender’s country belongs with the foreign return address. Do not append your own country to the recipient block.

UK return block — fictional example

ALEX RIVER
24 EXAMPLE LANE
LONDON SW1A 1AA
UNITED KINGDOM

Here, USA identifies the delivery country and UNITED KINGDOM identifies the return country. The sample return address is fictional: use your own usable address and its local postal format.

Use a location where returned mail can be handled. If you are traveling, confirm that arrangement before posting rather than relying on a hotel you are about to leave.

Keep reply instructions separate from the envelope address#

If you want a reply by email or to another correspondence address, put those instructions inside the letter. Do not scatter competing addresses across the envelope front. Follow any recipient instructions about a department or reference number.

For the US delivery block, USPS readability guidance (opens in new tab) recommends a complete address, dark ink on a light background, consistent alignment and uppercase letters. Clear formatting cannot make an incomplete or invented address valid.

Check the different requirements of US printing#

With Postmarkr, enter the delivery address and a usable US return address in the mailing form. The service adds a separate address page. You do not need to build an international envelope layout into your uploaded letter merely because you are outside the US.

Use only a US return address you are authorized to use. Do not enter a fictional example or a random business to satisfy the requirement.

If a US contact lets you use their address, agree how they will handle returned mail. Put your overseas correspondence details inside the letter when the recipient needs them.

Without a usable US return address, physically posting from your country may fit better. The abroad-to-USA mailing guide explains that choice.

Read both address blocks before handoff#

Read each block against the original instructions: the recipient’s full delivery address, the correct destination country line, and a return address where someone can handle undelivered mail.

For US printing, review the generated address page and US return address. For overseas posting, check the finished envelope and follow your carrier’s postage and handoff instructions.
